It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Admit it, you sang that one in your head, didn’t you? 😉 As we count down to Christmas, I’m yearning for all things festive this time of the year, including beverages like hot cocoa and eggnog. And, while Swiss Miss makes a ready-to-brew, fairly low-carb alternative to other hot cocoa mixes out there, I was coming up empty-handed when looking for low-sugar, low-carb eggnog in stores.

Low Carb and Keto Friendly Eggnog Recipe

I should preface this next part by saying I love anything custard-style and creamy textured. From my Crème Anglaise sauce to rich caramel cheesecakes, from delicious panna cotta to decadent Crème Brulee, I am here for any creamy. custardy goodness. And yes, that includes ALL THE EGGNOG!

When I had a few leftover egg yolks one day, I decided to try my hand at a Crème Anglaise sauce and fell in love. It’s so easy to make and really adds a nice, delicious touch to otherwise basic desserts. It’s become a staple in my fridge for an easy treat for guests when hosting. One day, though, as I was enjoying the custard, I started to think about how I could turn it into more of an eggnog type drink and started to experiment in the kitchen.

For years at my parents for Thanksgiving and Christmas, my stepdad and I would indulge in eggnog spiked with bourbon, shaving fresh nutmeg over the top as a garnish. Any time I smell nutmeg it takes me back. However, I hadn’t been able to indulge in spiked eggnog because of all of the carbohydrates and sugar. That is, until now!

Notes for this Recipe:

Yes, this contains another recipe for the base. Don’t turn away just yet! I get discouraged, too, when recipes have multiple other recipes to create. However, TRUST ME on this one. Try the Crème sauce once, and you’ll want it as a staple in your fridge, because it’s great on EVERYTHING. Fruits, sugar-free ice cream, your favorite fathead dough dessert, etc. It takes any ordinary dish up a notch and is so easy and quick to make.

Sip, don’t chug. This is a bit of a strong drink; the ice cube helps dilute it a little as you mix and enjoy. This is definitely a sipper vs. a DRANK, if you know what I mean. And yes, if you don’t want alcohol, you can omit the rum, although I would opt for a bit of almond extract to round out the flavors a bit if so!

Fresh nutmeg takes this up a notch. I don’t always have whole nutmeg on hand, but if you do, I would opt for micro-grating fresh nutmeg onto this drink vs sprinkling the ready-made spice, as it adds a more potent flavor and takes this up a notch!

This eggnog has a smooth consistency, much like Baileys once the ice had melted a bit. If you want a thicker drink, feel free to add more of the Crème Anglaise sauce until you’ve reached your desired consistency. If you want it thinner, add in more cream.

Enjoy! Let me know what you think of this spiked eggnog recipe. So far, it’s the closest I’ve come to an easy- and fast-to-create eggnog recipe that doesn’t break the bank and require a multitude of ingredients.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and happy sipping!

Low Carb, Sugar-free Spiked Eggnog Recipe

Enjoy this classic holiday beverage without any of the guilt! This eggnog recipe is sugar-free and keto-friendly.
Servings 1 cocktail
Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes

Equipment

  • Swizzle stick
  • Cocktail glass
  • Double jigger

Ingredients

  • 5 tbsp Bacon and Cream Crème Anglaise sauce*
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream (more depending on desired consistency)
  • 1 shot Mount Gay Eclipse rum
  • dash nutmeg to taste
  • dash cinnamon to taste
  • 1 large cocktail ice cube or 2 regular ice cubes
  • more nutmeg for garnish

Instructions

  • Place the ice cube(s) in a cocktail glass.
  • Add in the Crème Anglaise sauce and heavy cream. Stir to combine. (Note: the ice cube will melt a little as you make this. You want this to happen so it dilutes the mixture a bit for the final drink)
  • Then add in the rum, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Using a swizzle stick or cocktail stirrer, stir the drink until well blended.
  • Top with more nutmeg before serving. Salud!
